CommBank’s Head of Australian Economics, Gareth Aird, with Simon Hunter, CBA's Head of Business Banking Sales, Global Markets, to discuss the primary outcomes of the RBA's November meeting. Gareth unpacked the increase in the cash rate target by 25bp to 2.85% that was expected by us and most analysts. Gareth spoke about how the RBA have downgraded their GDP forecast for 2023 and 2024 to 1.5% in each year. Gareth and Simon also talked about how the RBA have delivered a massive amount of tightening in a short space of time. The RBA’s 25bp interest rate hike means that they have taken the cash rate up by 275bp between 4 May and 1 November – (seven meetings, which is just six months).
