Kanto Railway is a private railway with two lines in Ibaraki Prefecture. Despite being relatively close to Tokyo, both lines are characterized by the fact that they are not electrified, and passengers are transported by modern-style diesel cars. The Joso Line that appears in this video is a 51km line that connects Toride Station and Shimodate Station, and the line between Toride Station and Mitsukaido Station is one of the few double-track, non-electrified lines among Japanese railways. This video includes the area from Toride to Mitsukaidō Station along the way. The reason why the Joso Line will not be electrified is that there is a geomagnetic observatory in Ishioka City near this line, and it is explained that DC electrification may affect observation. The Joso Line is close to Tokyo (37 km from Nippori Station in Tokyo), there are many houses along the line, and trains run frequently. Still, the view without overhead wires has a different atmosphere from the commuter lines in the city, and the scenery along the line looks more laid-back than in the city center. This video is a rather long journey of 30 minutes, but please enjoy the leisurely scenery of southern Ibaraki Prefecture, along with the slow pace of the diesel car and the high-pitched engine sound compared to the pace.
