If you know me well you've probably heard me talk about the Choro Q franchise before. For the uninitiated, it's a series of racing games based on a line of Japanese toy cars featuring extensive customization mechanics. You might have wondered how I managed to hear about this franchise, considering it was only localized occasionally and under many different names, and it was through this game. Penny Racers (aka Choro Q 64) is actually fairly different from most of the other games in the series. While the games on the Playstation consoles tend to follow more closely in the footsteps of Gran Turismo, Penny Racers has far more in common with Mario Kart. It still has a lot of parts to collect, though, and it has an interesting point system which forces you to choose where you want your upgrades. Some of the choices are clearly better than others, but it's an interesting idea and I wish more of the games had used it. The N64 game hasn't held up quite as well as the playstation ones in my opinion - it's far more limited in track selection and the AI is so ludicrously homicidal that it makes using weapons fairly useless. Still, it does have a track creator that you don't see here, which is kind of cool. This run was an absolute nightmare to record. This was done all in one sitting, and the fact that I don't repeat any races (I do restart a few, but I never win a race twice) drastically limits the number of parts I can collect. This took a lot of tries. At least until I got out of class B, after which it gets much easier.
