What’s the difference between a swim spa and a spa pool? On the outside, swim spas and spa pools look fairly similar. However, swim spas are much larger and deeper than spa pools – generally 4m to 8m in length and 1.3m to 1.5m in depth. Swim spas also have one other major difference to spas - they are designed for swimming in. While spa pools and swim spas can both have hydrotherapy jets, swim spas also have large swim jets for swimming against. How do swim spas work? Swim spas work by using large swim jets to create a continuous current or stream of moving water which you can swim against. In essence, swim spas are to swimming what treadmills are to running - you ‘swim in place’, without moving forward. What’s the difference between a pool and a swim spa? Pools are traditionally geared towards hot weather and for holding cold water. Swim spas can be either hot or cold and you can easily change the water temperature depending on your needs. Pools also tend to be a uniform shape and are generally not suited for just sitting in and lounging. Swim spas, however, are specifically designed to seat people in comfort. Pools generally hold more water – but that's not necessarily an advantage, particularly when it comes to heating costs. Because you can get all the benefits of swimming without needing a long lane to travel down, swim spas are a lot smaller so they require a lot less water. One of the most interesting differences between swim spas and pools is that swim spas are completely portable and pools typically are not – making them a great long-term investment as you can take them with you when you move.
