Book 9 is the central scene of the epic insofar as it is the book in which Paradise is lost. We pick up the narrative from the previous lecture with Eve persuading Adam, or rather gaining his permission, to part from him for the sake now not only of productivity, but to demonstrate their freedom has not been curtailed by the mere presence of evil. Satan seizes the opportunity of the couple divided, and deceives Eve, bringing her to fall. Thereupon she brings the fruit to Adam, who eats in full knowledge of what he is doing. The effects of sin lead first to their abuse of one another as objects, then to a quarrel, a 'vain contest' of mutual accusation, of which Milton concludes the book by saying 'appeared no end.'
