The East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit The East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project involves the construction of a light rail line on the east side of Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley, running on a north south route. The project’s 9.2-mile route will connect the LA Metro’s east-west G Line at the Van Nuys Station with the Metrolink Station in Sylmar San Fernando. The first phase will travel 6.7 miles along the center median of Van Nuys Boulevard to San Fernando Road. A second phase continues northwest another 2.5 miles along the Metrolink rail line. A total of 14 new stations are planned as are nine traction power substations, on overhead contact system, 34 vehicles and a maintenance and storage facility planned for Keswick Street. Once completed, it is estimated that the line will carry 35,000 riders per day, according to LA Metro. The line will connect to Van Nuys Civic Center, senior and assisted living facilities, Charter High School of the Arts, county family and children services facilities, the former GM plant, and major shopping centers, Panorama High School, Arleta High School, Pacoima neighborhoods and City Hall, and the city of San Fernando. The new rail line is planned to connect with both the Van Nuys Metrolink Amtrak Station, as well as the Metrolink station at Sylmar San Fernando to provide L.A. Metro transit customers with greater interregional connectivity. The second planned phase of the rail line will turn northwest on the L.A. Metro-owned right-of-way along San Fernando Road and connect to the City of San Fernando, adding three new stops there. The East San Fernando Valley Light Rail will be the first rail line to be built in the Valley since the original Metro Red Line subway was extended to North Hollywood in 2000. Operations are anticipated to begin somewhere between 2028 to 2030. The capital project cost for the first phase is estimated to be around $3 billion.
