Beavers have a big back foot. Some people don't realize how large that foot actually is. As a beaver trapper I want to maximize my chances of catching that beaver so I want to use a trap that will catch ANY of his feet. Yes you can use a smaller trap to catch a beaver by the front feet, but you are reducing your odds of making a successful catch in doing this. If all you have available are smaller size traps, by all means, use them to trap beavers. But if you are buying traps to trap beavers, I would recommend looking at traps with at least a 7.5" jawspread.
