2x KONE Main Elevators @ Wafi City Phase 1/2, Bur Dubai, Dubai, UAE

Wafi City belongs to the first generation of mixed-use shopping malls in Dubai, alongside Al Ghurair Centre, BurJuman, and City Centre Deira, and the very first to feature a distinct theme. Opened in 1991 and expanded over eight phases, it enforces a consistent Ancient Egyptian theme both on the outside and inside, complete with replicas of Egyptian temple exteriors, columns and statues, and pyramid-shaped stained glass ceilings. Aside from its main function as a retail mall, it added functions such as office space, residences, a leisure centre, two hotels, and a traditional Arabian souk. Once considered one of the most popular shopping malls in Dubai, its patronage declined over the years with the opening of larger and newer malls elsewhere (especially Dubai Mall), and nowadays is pretty much considered as a "dead mall" by many if not for visitors to the visa centers within the mall's office section and the Carrefour hypermarket, as well as guests of the hotels. The first phase of Wafi City comprises of retail shops beneath a pyramid-shaped skylight located at the southwestern corner of the mall campus, while the second phase is an office addition behind it, also with an even larger pyramid skylight. The first phase lacked any elevators, at least those visible within the public areas; hence the set of two panoramic passenger elevators of the second phase featured in this video basically served both the first and second phases. These were pre-EcoDisc era bottom-drive installations by KONE that had been modernized very recently using the ReSolve package. At the time of installation, these would likely have had "M" series fixtures with TMS controllers; they now had KSS 670 fixtures with flush mounted round buttons and orange dot-matrix indicators. Their 1990s-style cabs with patterned stainless steel walls and vinyl tiles had been retained, however, alongside the motors that produced a rather high-pitched VVVF noise. The cabs were quite spacious, with each cab having curved glass walls that allowed for a view of the atrium beneath the skylight. One of the cabs had broken floor tiles that had not been replaced, indicating shoddy maintenance. They were also rather slow for five landings, which especially seemed so with a rather slow acceleration.
