Wil Myers Padres Career Tribute/Highlights (2015-22)

Brought over as the youngest and perhaps most enticing player of A.J. Preller’s wild first offseason in 2014-15, Wil Myers had a Padres career that was polarizing to say the least. While there was definitely some exciting moments, there was a lot of injuries, frustration and underachievement too. Did he live up to the contract extension (6 years, $83M) he was signed to in January 2017? I think we can all agree the answer is no. Would his Padres career be categorized as a disappointment? Perhaps. But you know what else can be said about Wil Myers? He was a bright light in a dark era of Padres baseball from 2016-18. He represented the team at the 2016 Home Run Derby and All-Star Game in San Diego. He was a key contributor on the 2020 team that ended the franchise’s 14-year postseason drought (albeit in a shortened season of questionable legitimacy). He shouldered a lot of pressure signing an extension to be the face of the franchise days after they became the city’s only major league sports team. He dealt with position changes, trade rumors, and benchings/reductions in playing time. And he handled it with class and accountability. Showed nothing but love and appreciation for the team and fanbase. Was the longest tenure Padre prior to his departure. Best of luck in Cincinnati, Wil. Career stats as a Padre: .254/.330/.451 771 hits (12th in team history) 134 HR (6th in team history) 433 RBI (7th in team history) 171 2B (8th in team history) 14 3B 94 SB (12th in team history) 435 R (8th in team history)
