Friends That Hike - Vagabond Peak & Cloudripper (2020)

07.22.2020 Vagabond Peak - 13,374' Cloudripper - 13,525' Elevation Gain: 4,846' Distance: 15.01 This past weekend Sonia Wong Cardenas, Robin Jamie, and I decided to skip town to avoid the heat and double tag some 13'ers. What was originally suppose to be an overnight backpacking trip ended up being a day hike because South Lake Rd was being repaved and for reasons unknown they closed off the overnight parking lot, which led us to believe that all overnight backpacking was cancelled. As bitter as we all were we made the best of it and decided to just day hike it since it was still early in the morning. Cloudripper is the highest peak of the Inconsolable Range in the Eastern Sierra and has arguably some of the best views in the Sierra. There are 2 main trails that leave the parking lot. On the north end is the main trail that leads to Parchers Resort and intersects the Green Lake Trail. On the south end this trail will lead you to the Chocolate Lakes, Long Lake, and onto Bishop Pass. We took the north trail and continued up to Green Lake. From the Green Lake turnoff the trail is pretty steep until you get to Brown Lake. A mile further up the trail you'll reach Green Lake, which sits at 11,000'. From this point you can clearly see Vagabonds impressive peak. To get to Cloudripper you must go up and over Vagabond. We continued on the trail around Green Lake to gain the Coyote Ridge. Once we hit the ridge we were already above the tree line. From here this is where it gets difficult, and tricky. At some point you have to leave the trail to make your way up to Vagabound. There are 2 brutal sections of scree and some light bouldering. The first section is about 500' which gets you to a plateau where you can now clearly see Vagabond standing very tall. The second section that takes you to the summit is about 700' of pure bouldering fun. It started off as some light bouldering and ended in some exposed class 3 all they way to the summit block. The summit is pretty exposed and narrow so taking any kind of group photo can be difficult, especially if it's windy. After tagging Vagabond we had to improvise our way down 400' of bouldering until we got to the Cloudripper saddle, only to do more bouldering up to the Cloudripper ridge. There are two ill defined gullies that will gain you to the ridge, we decided to go the right. Once you gain the ridge that will take you to a false summit, but to your left you'll see a class 3 climb up that leads to a narrow ledge and then the actual summit. The final climb on some very solid rock wasn't that difficult, but the exposure on both sides can be very unnerving for folks who are afraid of heights. The views on the summit was remarkable. The Palisade Crest to the South, Big Pine Lakes to the East, and Chocolate Peak and Chocolate Lakes to the west. Truly a beautiful summit with views of peaks and lakes in every direction. After soaking it all in we headed back. We reversed bouldered down Cloudripper, bouldered up toward Vagabond ridge again, bouldered down the other side of Vagabond, and then the last 500' feet down the talus section. Overall I thought this trail offered some of the best class 2 and class 3 hiking and climbing in the Sierra. Enjoy the photos and happy trails!
