Various of Solheim meeting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse STORYLINE: Sri Lanka's president and the leader of the Tamil Tiger rebels agreed on Wednesday to resume peace talks, raising hopes that the country can avoid sliding back into civil war after months of escalating violence. Norwegian peace envoy, Eric Solheim, said the two sides had accepted a proposal for talks to begin in Switzerland in February. Solheim, who brokered the country's 2002 ceasefire, spoke after meeting with rebel leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran in the rebel-held city of Kilinochchi. Rebel peace negotiator Anton Balasingham said the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) had agreed to stop all acts of violence. "We have given an assurance to the Norwegian and to the president of Sri Lanka through the Norwegian facilitator that the LTTE from now on, will cease all forms of violence against the government forces," he said. However, he said the LTTE's ceasefire was conditional on Sri Lankan forces also ceasing "violence against the LTTE as well as the Tamil innocent civilians". The rebels have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese of discrimination. In attacks before the talks on Wednesday, a police officer was wounded when a grenade was thrown at a security bunker in the north, allegedly by the rebels. Separately, unidentified gunmen killed two people, believed to be rebel supporters, in the Tamil city of Jaffna. And in another incident, an anonymous bomb threat at Colombo's World Trade Centre forced the police bomb squad to evacuate the parking lot and search for an explosive, but none was found. Police also were searching for those responsible for a series of explosions on Tuesday night in Colombo that caused widespread panic but no known casualties. At least 81 government security personnel have been killed in attacks blamed on the Tamil Tigers since December 4 2005.
