Call it naive optimism, but if you ask him, the road is open for new adventures. Not afraid to explore the twilight of his heart, Jonathan Rhodes (Groningen, NL) plows through his soul and reaps narrative songs that he delivers with great energy, supported by his five-piece band. His music is best described as Americana/folk with traces of blues and a hint of gospel. Engaging roots rock is mixed with small, fragile songs, causing the listener to edge ever closer to the edge of their seat. It is in those intimate moments that it becomes clear he is a singer-songwriter first and foremost. In 2022, Rhodes released his first EP 'Dirt'. Dutch Americana star Danny Vera played tracks in his live radio show for several weeks. Music blog 3voor12 wrote: "It is an exemplary introduction to his abilities. This storyteller is driven by quality and vision, and is extremely convincing as a songwriter." In 2023, he released a live album: 'Live at Het Rode Hert'. He performed at ESNS, Tuckerville, and Hit The City and provided opening acts on well-known Dutch stages for various American and Dutch artists (Shovels & Rope, DeWolff, Voltage, Tre Burt, Hackensaw Boys). Rhodes has won the POPgroningen Talent Award and the public award of the Grote Prijs van Nederland. Rhodes views himself as a musical late bloomer. In his youth, he never fully understood the allure of the Top 40, but he was offered little else. Early in his college years, he began writing his own material, and while still very green, he participated in the national singer-songwriters contest Grote Prijs van Nederland, where he won the public award: "His songwriting ability is excellent; a very well-deserved finalist." It was later in his twenties that he discovered musical giants from the previous century, such as Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Townes Van Zandt, fueling his love for pure music. Contemporaries such as Jason Isbell, Justin Townes Earle, and Hiss Golden Messenger inspire Rhodes' more recent work. After a false start in the COVID-19 years, he decided to travel the country with his RV to play shows from a mobile stage. The broad audience that resonates with him confirms his belief that his 'old' music is still relevant today. In 2024, Rhodes is working towards his debut album.
