They stressed that the Constitution of Pakistan was a social contract and the public should have the authority to decide what changes were being made to their social contract. The forum pointed out that the notification for Justice Qazi Faiz Isa was issued 88 days ago and asked why no notification had been issued for Justice Mansoor Ali Shah so far. They said most clauses in the constitutional amendment were related to the judiciary, and therefore, these should be made with the involvement of bar associations regarding judicial matters. The Lawyers Joint Action Committee emphasized that lawyers should raise their voice for the oppressed. They said it was the lawyers who spoke out against martial law and dictators, from Ayub Khan to Musharraf, while the political parties failed to do so. “Today, the courts are being undermined and created at will by those who lack constitutional legitimacy and are insisting on amending the constitution despite being a product of Form 47,” Ali Ahmed Kurd said. He said the current constitution had failed to provide basic rights to the people. He said thousands were missing in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other regions. Across Pakistan, the lawyers are making their protests clear through press conferences, stating that this amendment will have no constitutional significance and will lead to devastation. “If the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party endorse this constitution, their democratic credibility will be nullified. The role of JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman concerning the constitutional amendment is commendable.” Ali Ahmed Kurd highlighted that senators were being blackmailed insensitively to push through this constitutional amendment. The most powerful pressure group in Pakistan is the lawyers, supported by civil society, students, and various segments of society. Advocate Rahib Ahmed Buledi announced that the Karachi Lawyers’ Action Committee had declared a nationwide movement and stressed that constitutional amendments should be made with the confidence of bar associations regarding judicial matters.
