Telling your child they have autism won't be a one and done conversation. Telling a child they have autism can be tricky. There are many things to consider. Some recent research has mapped out 4 broad themes to keep in mind when having this discussion with your child. 4 Themes: 1- Open and honest conversations about autism 2- Creating a shared understanding 3- Positively supporting the child's differences 4- Tailor the conversation to the child's developmental level When to tell your child is also an important thing to consider. Think about their developmental age, chronological age and if they're asking questions about why they're different. Also, avoid having this talk before school or at bedtime.
