Words for 'left' and 'right' in Australian Aboriginal languages

I did a few videos about the names of compass points/cardinal directions in Australian Aboriginal languages. And in connection to that I’d also like to discuss words for ‘left’ and ‘right’, so that is what I do here. Within linguistics, Guugu Yimithirr, a Pama-Nyungan language of northeastern Queensland, is well-known, and its speakers are equally famous. The language is known for having words for ’north’, ’east’, ’south’, and ’west’, but no words for ’left’ and ’right’. So when you describe where something is located (in relation to something else), those are the words that you need to use. And the speakers of the language are famous for excelling at telling where north is, where south is, and so on, even when it’s cloudy, so that the sun/moon is not visible. Well, as it so happens, this is not the case in all Pama-Nyungan languages in Australia. In many, there are in fact words for ’left’ and ’right’. In this video I introduce the situation found in Ngarla and Nyangumarta, two neighbouring languages from the northernmost part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. And I also refer to Stephen Levinson’s ’frames of reference’, that is to say, different frames/strategies used in languages around the world to describe where something is located (in relation to other things). Neighbouring and closely related languages have indeed been found to differ in this respect, and at times, clear differences are even found between different dialects of one and the same language… #aboriginallanguages, #australianaboriginallanguages, #AboriginalWords, #cardinaldirections, #CompassPoint, #north, #east, #south, #west, #right, #left, #frameofreference, #StephenLevinson, #StephenCLevinson, #GuuguYimithirr, #ngarla, #Nyangumarta, #case, #casemarking, #pamanyungan, #pilbara, #westernaustralia, #tamil
