Hunter Education Instructors Needed

Wyoming law requires anyone born after January 1, 1966 who wants to hunt in Wyoming to have completed a hunter safety course. That means demand for such classes stays high—which is a good thing; hunting is key to preserving Wyoming’s outdoor lifestyle. Another is its willingness of others to volunteer their time to teach others hunter safety, and along those lines, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is looking for persons 18 or older interested in becoming volunteer hunter education instructors. Hunter Ed classes were designed over 50 years ago with the objective of reducing hunting incidents accidents. Every state now has hunter education courses— these classes develop safe, responsible, ethical hunters and provide them the information to become lifelong hunters. The need for new volunteer instructors to teach hunter education across Wyoming is an ongoing task; demand for hunter ed classes increases at the beginning of each year, and a steady demand for classes in most Wyoming communities lasts the entire year. Wyoming’s volunteer instructors train over 4000 graduates each year, with 4097 new hunters in 2022. Hunter education courses, are effective, and emphasize the heritage of hunting. Responsible, ethical behavior by hunters and personal involvement in the community is essential to the future of wildlife and the survival of hunting. While there’s no pay for the job, instructors express a high degree of satisfaction in knowing they’ve helped preserve hunting’s traditions and values while promoting safe, responsible, and ethical hunting practices. If interested in becoming an instructor, go to the Game and Fish website, go to “education”, and find details relating to what’s involved, when new training workshops will happen, and applications. Requirements include: Submitting the application, and passing required background checks, possessing a hunter education certification, attending a Game & Fish-hosted training workshop, and teaching under the guidance of a mentor instructor. Call your regional Game and Fish office if you have questions. If you want to make a difference in someone’s life, perhaps teaching the present—and next generation of hunters is your calling.
