Spitfire Mk Vb - First Combat Sorties - IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad

Sooo. The Spitfire Mk Vb arrived last week and of course everybody and their mother are flying that thing. And of course I joined for a sortie or two. How does it perform u may ask! Well its the super maneuverable plane you may expect. Many german pilots will struggle against the Spit, especially if they aren't familiar with the inherent weaknesses. This Spit is the Mk Vb. Which means that it got introduced as a "upgrade" to the Spit Mk I and II. So the Vb came into service in 1941! However the Spit came to Russia in 1943. So it fights against much more powerful designs than just the Bf 109 F-2 (which it fought at the channel). Now it has to deal with powerhouses like the Fw 190 A-5 and 109 F-4 and G-4. At this point the Vb is simply outdated. All those planes are less maneuverable but overall much much faster. So to be successful in a spit you have to surprise the enemy and to get him into a turning fight. If the German just opens up the throttle and keeps distance you have no chance to get him. The draggy airframe doesn't help. (note the dive at the end of the video and how much energy I lost in the fight) But a wonderful aircraft to fly and to throw around, with nice characteristics. It enters a violent spin if you overdo the turning. Its fun to fly and its a opponent you really dont want to see if you low and slow. But more details to another time. I hope you enjoy the video.
