FRR-4 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit x2 Ferocious legs destruction process. Pen-D CAY & JLP and seemingly others in chat. One way or another, far from obvious who to race with. That is, who to try to hang with. Main group, of course. And that seemed to be a charge of CAYs. Not understanding the FRR cat system, I assume CAYs are cat-B-ish, so not the sort to try to keep up with. But then a sprinkling of JLPs amongst the group meant that before a shake-out, I should be with them. As usual I forgot to factor in that being a shorter distance race, most would go hardr from the start. It ceraintly felt really hard. By 1km I was feeling over-cooked. But 80th of 97 suggested that most JLPs must be ahead. All day I'd been feeling off, and telling myself that through the previous 3 stages I'd already taken far too much out of my spindly legs. Was this shaping up to be a crash & burn day. A sad iTT like Anne's (but she's strong minded and plucky). Heck, give it a go. Let the legs decide when to drop out. Burn them up, like there's no tomorrow. This malarky isn't generally fatal. By 3km, after 6 minutes of solid red numbers, I was dangling on the edge of blowing up. Mind and body. What am I doing! This is all way out of my league. Once upon a time ... sure, but that was then. That was when the body was quite different. That was when I was a legit athlete. It's all different now. Though I have no idea how different, where different. Or how best to handle what I've got. Not just in racing, but in health and life in the round. This isn't Hushbuppies, sofa, daytime TV and reading through half moon spectacles. This is some sort of sport, as in being an outlier, an anomoly. Yes there's others of my age that do this (a fair few far better than me), but they don't have the same physical apparatus to deal with (meaning physiological matters). Definitely, in such matters, an anomaly. So a pioneer, as far as I can tell. Charting way beyond known worlds. And in all this running blind and clueless. I digress. That's irrelevant to the race, everyone's race. I saw an FB post from someone complaining that they'd thrown in teh towel after 2 races because of FRR's classification system. Easy for me, as I don't begin to understand or relate to it. My races are simply a matter of chasing after whoever I see ahead. I dismiss most tha disappear into the distance as not my competition. I assume that most around me are heavy set sprinters, here for their beloved sprints (unlike me, whose sprinting times are long gone). Those behind I feel guilty about. I don't mean to "beat" anyone in anything, let alone an innocent race. That is unless they behave in a way that gets my back up. Easily done. Surging, taking advantage of the distorted Zwift descent algorithm, nasty or bossy chat, sticky watts, loitering at the rear (all too like me, but I'm just hanging on for dead life). If annoyed enough, that can morph into a smouldering rage which can turn me into a full on racer. At that point I'm as ruthless and brutal as can be, so just like most racers. Then taking advantage of others, being callous and exploitive. Colluding, tricking, the works. Worse, for them, it gives be watts galore. But nothing like that in this race. This was just a matter of not drowning. Not being swept into abject failure. Tell myself, that ahead, they know not what they do. How could they. Ahead we've younguns, cycling fashionista, uncalibrated trainers, mis-catted riders who obviously should be in far stronger pepper classes.
