Throughout a significant portion of World War II, the British Army found itself equipped with a series of tanks that fell on a spectrum from poor to just marginally satisfactory. Some of these tanks were hastily deployed and earned notoriety for their unreliability. Others endured prolonged development periods and only became somewhat effective after numerous alterations. The majority lacked the armor needed to withstand enemy anti-tank weaponry, and nearly all suffered from inadequate firepower. That's why, starting in 1943, British armored divisions embraced the American Sherman: a tank often outmatched by its adversaries, but valued for its reliability, adaptability, and crucially, its widespread availability. It was only in the very late stages of the war that the British managed to develop an effective tank design although this achievement had no impact on the overall outcome of the conflict. So, Why did it take Britain a considerable amount of time to develop a tank that was genuinely efficient? #britishtanks #ww2tanks #tankbattle
