In the midst of a career year, and just two months following his victory in the 1996 NBA 3-Point Shootout, Washington Bullets guard Tim Legler tore his ACL late in a 122-108 win over the Boston Celtics on April 10, 1996. His appearance as defending champion at the 1997 NBA 3-Point Shootout marked the first time Legler had stepped onto the NBA hardwood in nearly a year. He didn't show much signs of rust, scoring 17 or higher in each of his three rounds on his way to a second place finish behind Chicago Bulls guard Steve Kerr. Legler attempted to make a return to game action following the All-Star break but suffered another knee setback just three games into his comeback. After another month of inaction, Legler continued to suffer from fluid buildup in his knee, leading to sparse playing time and eventually a second surgery after his team's ouster from the 1997 playoffs. Legler, by then 30 years old, never fully returned to form, retiring three seasons later following a 23-game stint with the Golden State Warriors.
