7029 Clun Castle: Solo Thunder Up The Lickey Incline

For the first time since 2006, the Lickey Hills echoed to the sound of a solo, unassisted steam locomotive working flat out up the notorious 'Lickey Incline', between Bromsgrove and Blackwell. Standing at a gradient of 1 in 37.7 for a distance of 2 miles, it is the steepest continuous climb on a UK main line. Doing the honours was 7029 'Clun Castle', followed by 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland', working two morning and afternoon runs between Tyseley and Worcester for Vintage Trains, named 'The Lickey Banker'. The original plan was for a heavier load and to be banked up the Lickey by Pannier Tank No.9466. With the Pannier unavailable, the load was reduced to 6 coaches, the maximum permitted for steam to work up the climb unassisted during leaf fall season. The morning train was hauled by Clun Castle, which was a significant event in itself, as no Castle has ever worked up the Lickey before, in preservation. Knowing full well how packed out locations on the climb get for steam, dad and I arrived at Vigo Bridge, three quarters of the way up, at around 8am so that I could secure the prime position for a panning shot that I had in mind. We were then joined, 45 minutes later, by another, and then another until, 4 hours later, we had a full house ready to witness Clun attack the bank just after mid-day. She did so, with gusto, hitting the bottom of the bank at 63mph and going on to top the summit at 33mph! All the while, providing a spine tingling soundtrack in typical Great Western fashion. Following the excitement and drama of Clun's run, we close things off in the peaceful surroundings at Ladywood, between Droitwich and Worcester. Here, we see the Duchess hurrying along, in the faded light, with the Tyseley to Worcester leg of the afternoon train, making a pleasant end to the day's events. 00:00 7029, Vigo Crossing 02:50 6233, Ladywood Filmed on Saturday November 20th 2021, using a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone.
