Ivan Mestrovic - RUŽA MEŠTROVIĆ (English)

The portrait of Mestrović’s wife Ruža was made in London in 1915, and its plaster model is kept in the Gallery. The half-length female figure represents the sculptor’s wife who was an artist herself. Her posture is gracefully slender, even slightly theatrical: the head in profile turned to the right, arms propped wide on the hips with an ample, soft cloth falling over them. There is an impression that she is intentionally posing and trying to present herself primarily as a lady and only secondly as an artist. However, due to her grace and elegance the figure is attractive and her pomposity acceptable. The sculptural modelling is very soft; the cloth clings to the body and stresses the figure. Meštrović, however, exploited neither drapery nor musculature for an agitated play of light and shadow, but reduced the rounded anatomy to even and smooth surfaces across which our gaze can glide unhindered. The position of the body is calm and dignified, and a partial detachment from symmetry makes the composition dynamic. Ruža Meštrović has been presented as a socially distinguished woman, a spruced up lady, but also spiritually rich and interesting, whose lowered look in no way reflects modesty but, on the contrary, intriguing secretiveness.
