Donkey Kong Country Returns has fallen a bit by the wayside when it comes to discussion of the franchise as a whole, knuckling up celestial bodies aside. However, the game remains loaded with excellent level design concepts more than worthy of celebration, with Muncher Marathon being among the finest. Chases in DKC had been alright before this, but the munchers provide not just a great, horrifying setpiece to run away from, they create one of the whole series' best levels using nothing but simple level design concepts and weaponizing fear against the player.
