An emphatic yes! Sober living homes are effective. Over 90% of people that try to get clean and sober relapse within a year. That number goes down to about 50% for people who continue their recovery in a sober living home. So you have a 40% better chance of staying clean and sober, for at least a year, if you stay in sober living for at least 90 days. Going back to your old using environment, going back to where your old friends are, and the activities that you used to do – those are all the things that led to your drinking and drug use. It makes sense that you’d want to avoid those settings for a while longer after you get clean and sober. Living a new life is challenging. Remember that your subconscious thinking is what got you to where you are today. Learning how to live life differently, and learning to deal with ‘people, places, and things’ without being triggered into using, takes time. Being in an environment around other people that are clean and sober and want to remain that way is the best thing you can do. Many people say that sober living for at least 90 days is just as important – if not more important – than going to treatment. Sober living is a good ‘step down’ option after primary and secondary care treatment. You have the necessary rules, you have the needed structure, you have the helpful accountability, and you have experienced team members in place to help you stay on track. Of course, you also have more freedom as you integrate back into society. But after time spent in the real world getting your life back on track, you have a safe space, a recovery-focused community, to come home to. Having a community of other sober people in place to help you make good, healthy decisions and continue working a 12 Step program is the best chance you can give yourself of staying clean and sober long term – let’s say making it to a year. And statistically, if you make it to a year, you’ve got a 67% chance of making it to five years. And that’s the next major milestone. Of course, each year is a milestone…but if you make it to five years, you have an 85% chance of making it for life! So setting yourself up for success right now, by staying in a high-quality sober living environment is going to help you in many, many ways.
