Information on the BMW N13 1.6 Turbo PRINCE Engine. BMW F20 114i 116i 118i

Hello guys, and welcome to mattsbeamer. Today I decided to put a video together based on the BMW engine called the N13. I don't know everything about the N13, so if you want to add your own experiences with the N13, a message down below, and ill add it in the description box, along with your user name. Its important we all share our stories to help gain more knowledge. The N13 is an engine that was built between BMW and the big French group called PSA. PSA has several brands in its Arsenal such as Citroën, DS Automobiles, Opel, Peugeot, Vauxhall Motors, and a few other companies. BMW started using this engine in 2011, in many of its small BMW's. It was used in the earlier F20s and F30s 114i,116i,116i ED,118i,120i, 316i, and the 320i ED. I believe the 120i only had it for a year before getting a newer engine. It replaced many BMW engines such as the N43B16, N43B20, N45B16, N45B20S, N46B18 and N46B20. Now we know what cars had the N13, what type of engine is it? Well, it is an inline-4 cylinder lump, which is turbocharged. I believe it was BMW's first turbocharged 4 cylinder engine since the old '70s 2002 turbo, but apparently, that thing was a beast of a car! The turbo on this car is a Garrett MGT1549ZDL. The engine block is made from aluminium, which helps reduce the weight, and has dual overhead camshafts with 4 valves per cylinder, so 16 valves in total. As I mentioned earlier, BMW has used this on a few models, which means the same engine has a few different power outputs, which I shall put in a table to save your time. Here is a list of known faults with the N13, if any of you know of any faults which I have missed out or new ones that develop over the years, I will type them up in the description box. Vibration: Some N13 engines are known to vibrate. If this is the case, then it could be down to dirty fuel injectors. Theys cars need a good spanking every so often to keep the system clean. I recommend the best fuel you can, as they are a bit fussy about what they drink. Uneven idle: If your N13 engine is running uneven, then there is a chance that the idling valve and throttle flap are dirty. A good clean can resolve this issue. Thirsty for fuel. Sometimes these engines can be thirsty when it comes to fuel, if this is the case the, check the airflow meter. Thirsty for oil. Make sure the car isn't leaking any oil or burning it. I've heard that they can leak around the Vanos. Look at the exhaust to check the colour of the smoke. If the smoke is blue, then it means its burning oil somewhere. Timing chains: I've heard somewhere that the timing chains on these engines can break, thou it is not as common as some of the more troublesome engines. The chain guides on this are better but the sprocket can wear. The cooling system: The cooling system on this variant, needs an eye kept on it. My car has done less than 40,000km, and it was changed at 25,000km. A Tinny rattle on startup. When you start the car and you hear what sounds like a loose metal type sound, but it goes away after about 30 seconds, then there is a chance its a wastegate rattle. I will leave a link in the description down below. BMW says that it is normal, but I must admit it isn't a pleasant noise, especially on a BMW. There is a clever guy somewhere, who sorted this noise out by utilising a VW clip. I saw this method along with a DIY on a random BMW forum. Tuning the Engine. These engines are very tuneable, mainly because the smaller models like the 114i and I think the 116i were de-tuned. So a slow 101bhp 114i can easily be tuned to 225hp.
