Pavement markings, which contain glass media to provide retroreflectivity, are often slipperier than the surrounding pavement. The sudden difference in friction between the pavement and pavement markings can create a safety hazard for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, especially in wet conditions. New products for pavement markings and colored pavement that provide additional friction have become available and show evidence of being durable. This webinar highlighted U of M research that investigated the friction differential between these new products and the surrounding pavement. The project involved performing skid resistance testing on a number of products, using different testing devices, and providing guidelines for evaluating the frictional characteristics of pavement markings and colored pavements. Transportation practitioners shared their perspectives on the research, including how the findings may be used by MnDOT and local agencies.
