Ceremonial dance: Shizuka no Mai(The Dance of Lady Shizuka) 　Performer: Nishikawa-ryu style, Nishikawa Suina 　Place: Maiden at Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu Shrine 　Shizuka Gozen(Lady Shizuka), a mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and a shirabyoshi(court dancer), is said to have performed this dance while in captivity, by the order of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the older half-brother of Yoshitsune and the first Shogun of the Kamakura shogunate. The graceful yet sorrowful dance expresses her longing for Yoshitsune, who had been expelled by his own brother. Kamakura Festival 　Since 1959, Kamakura Festival has been enlivening the city with various events throughout to mark the beginning of the spring season. For one week from the second Sunday of April, traditional dance performances, tea ceremonies, and Yabusame, the horseback archery, will be held at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine to celebrate the town’s history and tradition.
