The Western Balkan route, often referred to only as the Balkan Route, has historically been a significant pathway for migration into Europe. It witnessed a surge in migration following the increased flow of migrants through the Eastern Mediterranean route. After the European Union experienced a record number of arrivals in 2015, the number of irregular migrants using this route steadily declined for several years. However, since 2019, there has been a resurgence in its popularity. According to the European border agency Frontex, in the year 2022, there were 145,600 reported instances of irregular border crossings along the Western Balkans route, marking a 136% increase compared to the previous year (2021).
