Fisher 30 Pacific Child: # 32 Auto Pilot Repaired and New Engine Parts

Captain Larry bought Pacific Child in Nov 2017 to refit as his Last Yacht. Resisting the temptation to rename the boat Olaf Hart, once a week some progress is made. This time - March 6, 2018- The Autopilot comes to life after some basic trouble shooting. Nothing is ever simple, especially the simple things.. so in this case some ceiling in the Main Cabin had to be removed to get access to the wiring. You can bet we wont repeat that mistake when the ceiling goes back up ! Remember, leave a service loop in your wiring, so things can be removed for service, and trouble shooting. Don't go ape shit with fastening down wires and cables to the point that nothing can be moved or accessed ! This is the electrical equivalent of painting yourself in a corner. Just Don't ! The more I see of the AutoHelm 4000 and others in the series, the more I like them. It is clear that the 4000 was designed to function well on sailboats, and was built to be reliable, and serviceable. Nothing mickey mouse about it. There are plenty of videos showing this unit sailing a boat capably for weeks on end. On a ketch rigged double ender, a wind vane would be a pain and a challenge. This is a good solution for an old phart like me. I note from the manual that the auto pilot also has inputs for a wind vane, and an external nav source like a flux gate compass, loran, or gps. The 4000 uses the now old NMEA 196 data standard.. but there is plenty of simple reliable gear that used that standard. And my boat happens to have exactly that. Gear with Standard micro processors, discrete components.. no surface mount stuff. Read serviceable by mere humans. hmmm I can see I will be casting about to find some kind of interface between the new NMEA 2000 standard ( used on everybodys cheap GPS/Chart Reader)..which would let the AutoPilot navigate to and between way points, and etc. Wouldn't that be nice ! Also, we picked up the New Parts needed to service the Volvo MD-3B from Helmut's Marine.. who treated us very nicely and had what we wanted right on the shelf ! Shortly, I will replace the fuel and oil filters, the thermostat, put a new element in the primary water separator/fuel filter, and test the water temp sender. In the process I will get a peek inside the water cooling system, and will be able to tell if I need to flush it with "barnacle buster" eg muriatic/hydrochloric acid to remove calcium, barnacles, etc. Or not. I am hoping not !
