How to Plant a Bare-Root Rose | Sunset

Sunset's associate garden editor Johanna Silver shows you how to prepare and plant a bare-root rose. Winter is the time to plant bare root roses that are sold without soil. Soak the rose in a bucket of water for at least four hours. Choose a sunny location and dig a hole that's wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots. Build a cone in the center of the hole with back fill. Sprinkle in organic granular fertilizer and follow the package instructions. Give the roots a haircut and place the bare root rose on the dirt cone. Make sure the nubby part of the stem stays above the soil. Fill in the hole using the rest of the soil.
