Sheryl Sandberg Interview: From Google to Facebook

Sheryl Sandberg discusses her leadership philosophy, focusing on listening, empowerment, and creating a bottom-up culture. She details her experiences in the tech industry, including her time at Google and explains how she made her decision to join Facebook as COO. Sandberg advises women to start with big dreams and goals, and not to make sacrifices early in their careers that might limit their opportunities down the line. Sheryl Sandberg was born on August 28, 1969, in Washington, D.C., and moved with her family to North Miami Beach, Florida, when she was two years old. After attending Harvard, where she majored in economics and gained an MBA in 1995, Sandberg’s early career included stints at the World Bank and the US Department of the Treasury. She then joined Google as VP of online sales and operations in 2001, before she was brought to Facebook by Mark Zuckerberg in 2008 to try and make the social media platform profitable. She served as COO of Meta from 2008 to 2022. In her book, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead (2013), Sandberg re-ignited the debate about how women can best succeed in the workplace. Sandberg has been married three times. Her second husband, CEO Dave Goldberg, died in 2015. They had 2 children. Sandberg’s second book Option B (2017) details the sudden death of Goldberg and shares stories of people who've had to deal with traumatizing events, to face adversity, become more resilient and find joy again. In 2022, Sheryl Sandberg married the Founder of Kelton Global, Tom Bernthal. She runs the Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation and has been involved in other philanthropic efforts including Google.org and LeanIn.org. From the 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”, examines how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.
