Investors Lose Rs 9 Lakh Cr | FIIs Sell Over 10B Stocks In Oct | Scammers Clone Sunil Mittal's Voice

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) seem to be losing their appetite for Indian stocks this October, with heavy selling taking center stage. This marks a sharp U-turn in sentiment from September, as FPIs have been offloading significant amounts of equities, driven by concerns over high valuations and rising geopolitical tensions. Just earlier, FPIs were pouring money into Indian markets after the US Fed slashed rates by 50 basis points. But that momentum has flipped—now they're pulling out and redirecting funds to Chinese stocks. What’s driving the switch? Recent moves by Beijing to stabilize its shaky property and capital markets have rekindled investor confidence in China’s potential comeback. In a bid to support economic recovery, China’s central bank also slashed its key lending rates by 25 basis points, bringing them to fresh lows, giving a further boost to corporate profit expectations. As of October 21, FPIs have withdrawn a staggering ₹82,000 crore (around $10 billion) from Indian equities, the highest monthly outflow on record. For context, the last time we saw outflows at this scale was during the pandemic in March 2020, when FPIs pulled out over ₹65,800 crore. Scammers are constantly finding new ways to exploit unsuspecting victims and recent trends show that they're getting more sophisticated. While many of us are aware of scams involving cloned voices, it’s rare to hear about attempts to impersonate billionaires. In a startling case, fraudsters cloned the voice of Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Sunil Bharti Mittal, in an attempt to con one of his executives in Dubai into transferring a substantial amount of money. Fortunately, the executive was vigilant and sensible enough to realise that it was a scam. The scam quickly unraveled, but this incident highlights a disturbing trend in the world of online fraud. Scammers are now using advanced tactics like AI-generated deep fakes and voice cloning to deceive their victims. ..............................................................................................
