Meaning of PROBABILITY Measures of uncertainity is called Classical Approach. Probability on the basis of observations & collected data is called Statistical Approach. In Tossing a coin H or T are equally likely to occur. Similarly in throwing a Die 1,2,3,4,5 6 are equally likely to occur. Now will learn AXIOMATIC APPROACH RANDOM EXPERIMENT: (1) It Has are than 1 possible outcomes.(2)Not Easy to predict outcome in advance. EXPERIMENT: Doing an activity like tossing a coin or throwing a die. OUTCOME: Result of an outcome like (H,T) and (1,2 3 4,5,6) SAMPLE SPACE: Set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. SAMPLE POINT: Each element/outcome of a random experiment. SAMPLE SPACE: TOSSING A COIN: (H,T)=2=2to power1 TOSSING 2 COINS: (HH,HT,TH,TT)=4=2to power2 TOSSING 3 COINS: (HHH,HHT,HTH,THH,TTT,TTH,THT,HTT=8=2to power3 THROW1DIE: (1,2,3,5,6)=6=6Power1 THROW2 DICE: (11,12,13,14,15,16..........)=36=6Power2 EVENT: Any subset E of a sample space is called an event. TOSSING 2 COINS SIMULTANEOUSLY OR TOSSING A COIN TWICE IS SAME: SAMPLE SPACE IN THIS CASE IS: (HH,HT,TH,TT=4=2to power2) EVENT-A= Getting exactly 2 tails EVENT-B= Getting at least 1 tail EVENT-C= Getting at No tails EVENT-D= Getting tails more than 2 EVENT-E= Getting at most 1 1 head EVENT-F= Getting at most 2 heads TYPES OF EVENTS: Impossible(0), Sure(S), Simple(only 1 Element, Compound(more than I Element) ALGEBRA OF EVENTS: AorB=AuB={w:€A or w€B}=EitherAorB A& B=AnB={w:€A & w€B}= Common Abut notB=A-B={w:€A wnot€B} A`= S-A={w:€S, & wnot€B} MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE EVENTS: AnB=phy or 0 Simple events are always mutually exclusive EXHAUSTIVE EVENTS: Where Union of all events is equal to S.
