The Ramayan series was telecasted in 1987 on State run broadcaster, DoorDarshan. It was directed and produced by Late Dr. Ramanand Sagar, a great film maker who turned to the small screen at the ripe age of 70. Prem Sagar was the marketing director of Ramayan serial, who is part of Sagar World now. On Sunday morning 9-10 AM watching the Ramayan became like a ritual for the entire nation. Since there was hardly any television penetration in India at that time. Entire communities would come together to watch the series, which swept the nation off its feet. Due the respect for their beloved Lord Rama and Sita, they would garland the television sets, and put a Tikka, break a coconut and remove Aarti of the television set before the telecast began, all this after they have taken their customary bath. It was like going to a Pooja or Sacred Ceremony. Many miracles were reported during the telecast, like sick people coming out of Coma, and children started to respect their parents by touching their feet. It changed the psyche of the common man. In Jammu an angry mob burned down the electricity station when the lights went out during the telecast. Marriages and important meetings were re-scheduled according to the timings of the series. The streets were deserted, and no one would pick up calls even if there was an emergency, such was the crazy, frenzy that the series invoked in the common man of India. It was a bit hit in neighbouring Pakistan.
