UAlbany students arrested for hazing

ALBANY -- Several Universityat Albanystudents were charged with hazing and unlawful assembly after police officersfound them forcing pledges to lay face down in water while being hit withpaddles and rubber hoses. A neighbor called 911 to report a disturbance at 470 Hudson Avenue earlyFriday morning. Officers witnessed 14 people in the basement participating inan apparent initiation for a fraternity that was not sanctioned by theuniversity.  "Officers when they went down the stairs said it wasvery disturbing and quickly put it to a halt. seven people were arrested," saidSteve Smith with the Albany Police Department. In addition to the seven arrested for hazing, policearrested a neighbor, Philip Terra, 21, for pushing an officer to try to getinside. A ninth person, Frank Calandra, 18, was arrested on a drug charge. Neighbors said they frequently hear loud noisescoming from the home at all hours of the day and night. "Itwas my first night had all the lights off, was lying in the bed and I heard theyelling and screaming because I didn't know what it was, but then my roommatetold me there was a frat house next door and I should probably get used to it,"said Jazmine Delgado, who lives next door. "Whoever their fraternity leader is,he's like a drill sergeant. You can hear when he comes in the house and he'syelling and screaming that he wants them to do whatever it is he wants them todo." Delgadosaid she and her neighbors often brushed off the noise because it happened sofrequently.  "OnFriday when I heard the noises I didn't think they were cops and they werebeing arrested I chalked it up to another frat party," said Delgado.  TheUniversity issued a statement after the arrest to confirm eight of the ninearrested were students and point out they were not members of a recognizedfraternity. "UAlbany is taking immediate action againstthose involved in this off-campus incident through the campus judicialdisciplinary process. UAlbany proactivelyeducates students and parents about hazing issues and has a zero tolerancepolicy for any actions that are physically and mentally abusive to thewell-being of another," read the statement from spokesperson Karl Luntta. "TheUniversity at Albanycontinues to work in partnership with the Albany Police Department toinvestigate these allegations as well as to address any other behavior andquality of life issues occurring in the neighborhoods where our students reside." The university posts a list of 11 fraternities andsororities that are no longer recognized or considered active. It is considereda violation of the student code to "affiliate" with the organizations. "This is one of those things that's been happeningforever and everybody knows that it's been happening forever," said a neighbor, who declined to provide their name. "When you join an illegal fraternity, likethis one was not sanctioned by U. Albany, it's essentially a gang.  John Storte, 19, Nicholas Salamone, 20, Joseph Lane, 20 and Anthony Morello, 20,were charged with Hazing 2nd, Criminal Nuisance 2nd and UnlawfulAssembly. Vincent Serrecchia, 20, Joseph Sheehan, 21, and AnthonyWarme, 20, were charged with Hazing 2nd and Unlawful Assembly.Sheehan was the victim of a late September shooting less than a block away fromthe home. Warme was the only person arrested who was not a U. Albany student.  Some of the pledges received minor cuts, but declinedmedical attention. "I feel bad for the kids that it happened to, but joiningan illegal fraternity you have to know those risks," said Delgado. "They're notaccredited by the university, so there's got to be a problem there."
