USS Albany - CA-123 (Cruiser)

Delve into the rich history of the USS Albany (CA-123), an Oregon City-class heavy cruiser turned guided missile cruiser CG-10, marking an illustrious naval journey. Launched on June 30, 1945, by the Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts, and sponsored by Mrs. Elizabeth F. Pinckney, Albany was commissioned on June 15, 1946, at the Boston Navy Yard. Embarking on a shakedown cruise near Casco Bay, Maine, Albany traversed the U.S. East Coast, nurturing naval reservists and NROTC midshipmen. Setting sail on September 11, 1948, for its inaugural Mediterranean tour with the 6th Fleet, Albany commenced a decade-long rotation across the 6th Fleet, U.S. East Coast, West Indies, and South American ports. Notably, the ship played a pivotal role, transporting the U.S. representative to the Brazilian President's inauguration in January 1951. A transformative phase ensued as Albany underwent conversion into a guided missile cruiser, redesignated CG-10 on November 1, 1958, undergoing extensive modifications before recommissioning on November 3, 1962. Over the ensuing five years, Albany embarked on deployments in European waters, engaged in exercises with allied navies, and graced foreign ports. Following a decommissioning in 1973 for overhaul, Albany was recommissioned in May 1974, serving as the flagship for the 2nd and 6th Fleets. However, the cruiser's journey concluded upon its decommissioning on August 29, 1980, remaining laid up until its scrapping on August 12, 1990, due to the absence of a viable museum proposal. Noteworthy awards and artifacts, including ship fragments and a brass model, stand testament to Albany's legacy, now showcased in commemorative exhibits honoring its distinguished service. Explore the captivating tale of this versatile cruiser and its enduring impact on naval history.
