Why you don't see CUT opals in jewelry– Gemcutter prepares orange opal

How is a gem cut and polished? Today's gemstone that's ready for precision cutting ( aka: Faceting ) is something rarely seen commercially: Crystal Opal. Just as exciting: It's in a natural, fiery color! It's common to think of opal as opaque, and generally having a white complexion. But opal can actually be found in many colors—and can even be clear! "Crystal" (in this case meaning clear) is the preferred quality of opal for gemcutting, as it will allow light to enter inside. Today we'll perform the lapidary art of cutting and polishing this vibrant opal, and see how its clarity will turn this (commonly-opaque) gem into a brilliant gemstone. (Calm and relaxing sounds, crafting timelapse, and craft asmr) ▶ FAQ * What is gemcutting/faceting? Shaping & polishing gemstones is a craft called faceting— aka gemcutting. I'm here to bring attention to this seldom seen artform by taking you through its rewarding (and satisfying) process! * What does "precision cut" mean? My specific branch of gemcutting is a technique called "precision" cutting, which strives for symmetry, proportion, brilliance, and precise facet meets. Overall, it's the color, and shine, and the gem's best potential that takes priority over its final size– though I also strive to select the best shape for the gemstone in order to preserve as much material as possible (aka its "yield") * Have a question not already answered?
