The score was completed just before lunch on August 13, 1940, the day of a massive German attack on England during the Battle of Britain at the beginning of WWII. Sorabji was living in London at this time and continued to compose music through the catastrophic devastation of his city. But Gulistān does not sound like a work created in the depths of the deadliest conflict in human history. The work was inspired by a 13th century book of the same name by the Persian poet Sa'di. Gulistān - a collection of poems, stories, and wisdom - means Flower Garden.
