Forced to once again begin from scratch, he chose a spot in Birur, then a sleepy village around 240 kilometres from Bengaluru to set up an eatery. Since then Birur has grown to a bustling trading town, the spot where his venture, Preethi Canteen stands, is now a busy highway. And this tiffin restaurant has been elevated to legendary status by its many patrons for whom a halt here is a must when on the road around here. Over time, I have received many requests to taste their iconic masala dosae, and so on a recent drive to Shimoga, I stopped here and caught not just a taste of their tasty fare, but also a conversation with its second generation owner, Mr. Prakash Holla on what makes Preethi Canteen a hugely popular culinary institution.
