Pacific General Assembly Honors Kiingitanga at Koroneihana 2024. Hon. Aupito Sua William Sio, Chair of the Council of Chiefs for the Pacific General Assembly, addressed the historic gathering of Te Ariki Moana-nui-ā-Kiwa at the 18th Koroneihana, honoring Kiingi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII. During the event, the Pacific General Assembly presented a special taonga crafted by master carver Langi’o’uiha Tangulu of Tefisi, renowned for his work with the Vava’u Carving House. Youth from the Pacific General Assembly came from Tāmaki Makaurau, Waikato, Te Whanganui and Australia to carry the taonga - representing Tokelau, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Sāmoa, Pākehā and Māori. They carried the taonga through rain and a steadfast crowd, respectfully safeguarding it through the 3 hour Pōwhiri on a mat, before presenting it to the Kiingitanga – embodying the spirit of the warriors of Moana-nui-ā-Kiwa. A special acknowledgment was given to the taonga and Kiingitanga, thank you Tau’ili’ili Alpha Maiava for facilitating the connection between the taonga and it’s whakapapa and responding to the karanga honouring our sacred connections.
