10 Reasons Why People Quit Ukulele

Here are some of the 10 most popular reasons people quit ukulele. In the text below you'll find some suggestions for each of these challenges. REASON 1 - PLATEAU Definition: a state of little or no change after a time of activity or progress. When we first start learning ukulele, it is easy to learn the basics quickly. After learning how to play C, Am, F, and G7 we kind of hit a wall. If you have mastered the basics and find yourself in a plateau, I recommend The Beatles challenge. Songs by The Beatles are challenging. Spend a few days on each song. In any case, comparison is the thief of joy and it prevents you from seeing your own growth. Start keeping a daily ukulele progress journal and write down everything you master, no matter how small your accomplishments may seem. REASON 3 - PERFECTIONISM If you hold yourself back or refuse to move forward until something is perfect, you may be preventing yourself from moving forward. While it is great to have high standards, it is even better to expand your knowledge base. Sometimes moving forward to the next song or challenge helps improve your skills. You will see this if you finished the #30DayUkeChallenge and went back to lesson 1. Be more forgiving of yourself and keep moving ahead. REASON 4 - NOT PERFORMING This one might frighten the most people because we imagine ourselves performing and think that everyone is judging us or thinking we are awful at performing. Just like getting better at ukulele takes practice, so does performing. Start with something small, even if it means posting videos of yourself on an anonymous instagram account until you get comfortable enough to go public. REASON 5 - NO FOCUS If you go through multiple tutorial videos or multiple songs without finishing a song, you lack focus. Choose one song and work on it for multiple days until you memorize it. Look for more about this in reason 6. REASON 6 - NOT MEMORIZING After choosing 1 song to focus on (reason 5), start memorizing this song. How to memorize a song: a. Memorize line 1 b. Memorize line 2 c. Memorize line 1 and 2 d. Memorize line 3 4. Memorize line 2 and 3 Yes, this takes time. Yes, this gets easier the more songs you try this with. REASON 7 - POOR SETUP If your ukulele was not set up properly, it could have high action, a buzz, or sharp fret wires. If any part of your playing experience is painful, have someone with experience check your ukulele's setup. P. S. some fingertip soreness is normal REASON 8 - SEQUENCE This is the concern I have received the most comments for. If you don't know where to start learning ukulele and how to learn things in order, try taking the #30DayUkeChallenge. Despite external evidence of their competence, those experiencing this phenomenon remain convinced that they are frauds, and do not deserve all they have achieved. Individuals with impostorism incorrectly attribute their success to luck, or as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent than they perceive themselves to be. While early research focused on the prevalence among high-achieving women, impostor syndrome has been recognized to affect both men and women equally. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imposto... REASON 10 - FEAR You may be afraid that you haven't made enough progress or that you don't sound as good as you thought you would sound by now. You may be afraid of not making the most out of the money you spent buying a ukulele or you may be afraid for an upcoming performance. There will always be a certain amount of fear or uncertainty within us. The best thing you can do is work on memorizing music (see reason 6). Please share your experience below.
