Braces Explained: Pain Management In this video, I will be answer the question of "how to deal with orthodontic pain?" I start off by describing that orthodontic pain can be divided into two categories: 1] dental, which is the pain related to your teeth and 2] soft tissue, which is the pain related to your gums/cheeks To manage dental pain, I recommend doing everything you can to decrease inflammation. This includes eating soft food and keeping your mouth as cold as possible by eating cold foods. Also, anti-inflammatory medication can be used but they do slow down tooth movement. Tylenol is a great alternative for decreasing the pain and not having any impact on tooth movement! I recommend taking Tylenol or some anti-inflammatory one hour before your adjustments that way by the time we perform the necessary adjustments, your body has already absorbed the medication! To manage soft tissue pain, which is caused by the braces irritating your gums/cheeks, you can use a number of things. Wax is the most commonly provided item by orthodontist and can be used to make braces smoother and push your cheeks away from your teeth and allow for your cheeks to hurt. Also, you can use a topical anesthetic (link below) to numb up your cheek until the pain goes away. To do this, just dry the area of your mouth and put just a bit of anesthetic in the area until the pain goes away. Lastly, you have got to keep your teeth clean. When your gums get inflamed, they become puffy and more food gets stuck, the brackets become more irritated. This is a vicious cycle so please please please make sure to brush and floss to make sure your teeth stay healthy!
