This presentation was made for the Epsom & Ewell U3A (University of the Third Age) Jazz Group in October 2012 on the life of Jabbo Smith 1908-1991. He started touring the US in 1918, and he composed and made his best recordings for Brunswick in 1929, which are considered to be by far his best. He missed countless opportunities and was soon forgotten. He played the trumpet, trombone and euphonium and was arguably one of the best players in the late 1920s, and his modernistic approach was an important influence on the modern jazz players some 10 years later. He was re-discovered in the 1965 and toured the US and Europe, but never again recorded with the brilliance on the trumpet of his twenty 1929 recordings, but his composing and singing skills remained distinctive and attracted much interest and praise. There is currently a revival of interest in Jabbo and his music with more bands playing his numbers. Today's trumpeters rarely try to achieve the heights of Jabbo's late 1920s records.
