Day 1 Highlights | Rolex Swan Cup

Rolex Swan Cup 2024: Day One Recap Welcome to our coverage of the 22nd Rolex Swan Cup hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in the picturesque Porto Cervo. This year is particularly special as it marks the 40th anniversary of the partnership between YCCS and Rolex, a collaboration that began in 1984 with the third edition of the Swan Cup. The first day of racing saw a northeasterly wind blowing from 12 to 18 knots, which, despite an initial delay due to a storm front, allowed for all scheduled races to be completed as planned. This year’s regatta features a mix of fleet racing and windward-leeward courses, highlighting the versatility and competitive spirit of the Nautor Swan fleet. Race Details and Course Setup The race committee made a prudent decision to delay the start until 2:30 p.m. CEST, ensuring the safety of the competitors as they waited for the storm to pass. Once underway, the racing was intense and strategic. Group 1, reserved for Swans racing in compensated time, tackled three coastal courses of varying lengths tailored to the performance characteristics of the boats: • The Swan Maxi Division A completed a 24-mile course, extending around the island of Mortoriotto and finishing off the Gulf of Pevero. • The Swan S&S Division B faced a 15-mile course, testing their tactical skills through the Gulf of Arzachena. • The Swan Division C embarked on a 19-mile journey, with a longer downwind run to a mark in the Gulf of Saline, returning via the Passo delle Bisce strait. These courses challenged crews to manage frequent sail changes and engage in close-quarters battles, a true test of skill and teamwork on the water. Winners of the Day The competitive spirit was high, and several teams emerged victorious in their respective classes: - Maxi Grand Prix: The Swan 80 Umiko showcased superior speed and agility. - Maxi Cruiser: The Swan 90 Freya combined power and grace to take the lead. - Mini Maxi Grand Prix: The Swan 60 Sea Quill executed flawless maneuvers for the win. - Mini Maxi Cruiser: The Swan 65 Marlin II demonstrated excellent cruising capabilities. - Additional winners included the Swan 48 Elan in the S&S Racing class and the Swan 47 Matilda in the S&S Classic class. One Design Classes In the one-design classes, where the focus is on pure racing skill, the winners were: - ClubSwan 36: Black Seal excelled with top finishes. - ClubSwan 42: Canopo led the fleet with consistent performances. - Swan 45: Ulika 45 navigated the course expertly. - ClubSwan 50: Olymp, with its tactically astute crew, emerged as the leader. Looking Forward As the regatta progresses, the sailing conditions are forecast to change, with lighter winds expected. This will require teams to adapt their strategies to maintain their competitive edge. The coming days promise more thrilling races and potential shifts in the leaderboard. Stay tuned for more updates from the Rolex Swan Cup as we continue to bring you the latest from one of the most prestigious events in the sailing world. #RolexSwanCup #ClubSwanRacing #Rolex #YCCS #NautorSwan 📸 @clubswanracing | @tidalpulsemedia
