The Pulluvan community in Kerala is closely connected to snake worship. They consider the snake gods as their presiding deity and perform certain sacrifices and sing songs known as 'Pulluvan Pâttu', Besides that, they draw five colours floor paintings representing the Nâgas. This video shows the last part of a snake worship ritual. (This group was invited in Paris in 2007). The floor painting represents Asthanâgam, the 8 mythical serpents believed to support the world. The musical accompaniment is provided by two stringed instruments ; the Pulluvan kudam, a variable tension monochord pot made of mud or metal, and wrapped with calfskin. The Pulluva vîna, a small one stringed fiddle played generally by the Pulluvan men. The veena is made from hollow bamboo sticks, coconut shell, and wood. Earlier, the body of the vîna was made from the skin of udumbu (a monitor lizard found in Kerala). The kaimani or cymbals. Once the drawing is finished, the pûjari invites the Nâga to enter the image. The trance can begin. With their untied hair, women are ready to get possessed. Sweeping the kalam with their hair and a bunch of arecanut flowers, they wiped out the painting. The music stops and the possessed express the wishes of the serpent-gods.
