Thalidomide - could drug with dark past have brighter future?

The drug thalidomide was used between 1957-62 as a sedative and to treat morning sickness in early pregnancy but a serious side effect resulted in over 10,000 children born with severe birth defects. Professor Neil Vargesson, Senior Lecturer in Developmental Biology at the University of Aberdeen has spent almost 20 year researching how the powerful and complex drug caused the damage it did and if the clinically relevant aspects of it can be used to create a safe version.
