He was born in a very, very poor farming family with numbers of sisters and brothers and believe it or not, at that time there was a very sad, ultimately sad custom to kill their own baby to reduce the number of mouths to feed (in poverty). Monjirō was about to be the one, but fortunately got saved by his older sister. He left his family when he was 10, and after the family split up. We don't know why he decided to become a drifter, settling down nowhere.. why? or what for? His battle-hardened swordsmanship and his genuine humanity is just something. He is the Japanese jidaigeki "outlaw" western hero! There isn't any other such hero earlier or later. He encounters troublesome matters everywhere he goes, basically doesn't want to get involved, but he has too honest, sincere heart to ignore them. He once says his signature phrase saying "It is nothing to do with me", but he can't leave the people in troubles alone, therefore he always risks his life to save them without any returns.
