Thousands cheered as colourful floats and dancers paraded through the Sambadrome. The first school, Unidos do Porto da Pedra, comes back to the top league after 10 years, brought a theme inspired by Spanish mathematician Jerónimo Cortés’ work “Lunario perpetuo.” Following, samba school “Beija Flor de Nilópolis” told the story of Rás Gonguila, from the northeastern city of Maceió. He claimed to be a direct descendant of the last emperor of Ethiopia, and founded the popular carnival party, a reference in carnival festivities, becoming an influential personality in the state. Six more schools will parade on Monday. Rio's Sambadrome has been home to the parade since the 1980s, and is a symbol of Brazil's Carnival festivities.
