Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Hardware - Control Automation

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), sometimes called Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs), are a combination of hardware components and software programs that drive modern industrial operations. Before investigating the connections to the outside world and the driving logic, it is critical to discuss the hardware that is commonly found across all makes and models of PLCs. All modern PLCs contain a few consistent features. In this video, we compare several different manufacturers and learn about those similarities, and also identify the subtle differences. All PLCs contain a processor, or CPU, to store and execute the program logic. Without a CPU, the PLC simply becomes a gateway for information with the outside world—we might call this a ‘remote I/O’ module. The CPU must be tough, fast, and large enough to store complex programs with many hundreds (or thousands) of variables. The next important component in a PLC is the I/O connections, which may be embedded right along with the CPU in a micro PLC or may be removable as modules. Digital, analog, relay, and many others are available for interface with all kinds of field devices. Finally, all PLCs are capable of connecting to other devices in a network. For older PLCs, this may be a single RS-232 port for a PC programming cable. Most likely for any modern controller, the network options will include USB, Ethernet, RS-232, RS-485, or combinations of those. Communication adapter modules are also common. We explore three different popular manufacturers: Rockwell Automation (CompactLogix), Siemens (S7-1200), and Automation Direct (Productivity 1000).
