Hugh Newman and Yousef Awyan explore the perimeter of the tallest structure on the Giza Plateau, Khafre's Pyramid. A super-sized stone platform with monoliths weighing up to 170 tons flanks the northeast side showing signs of extreme weathering. On the opposite side, the edge of the pyramid is partly created from solid bedrock, showing remarlable ingenuity. The channels formed became the quarry for much of the plateau and in this video secret hypogeum caves, carved with incredible precision are revealed which are hidden away around the back of the pyramid. Do these lead to tunnels, or underground chambers not previously recorded? Did the builders of Karahan Tepe who carved into solid bedrock thousands of years earlier influence the builders? The team also discuss the traditions of this being built over the primordial mound and look closely at the lower granite casing stones that are now mostly fallen. Were these added later by Khafre, and does the evidence presented in this video suggest this may have been the first pyramid built on the Giza Plateau?
